To and not-to-be, all at once. Boris Niktin’s Hamlet is no retelling of Shakespeare material. Instead, the Swiss director outlines his own theatrical vision of identity, illness and reality in a mixture of performance and queer music theatre. The piece centres on performer and electronic musician Julia*n Meding, who – as a demanding vulnerable Hamlet character –exposes himself, his body and his biography to the audience’s gaze. He is accompanied, uplifted and counteracted by the prize-winning baroque ensemble Der Musikalische Garten. Can theatre be a place of solidarity? Meding’s struggle with reality brings the framing of the game itself into focus and turns “Hamlet” into a poetic revolt – raw, coarse, confrontational, antisocial, dazzling.
