The humorous and yet highly touching choreography Balthazar explores the fascination of humankind with everything animalistic as well as their contextualisation in art and culture.  The piece revolves around a real-life donkey. As a symbol of animal obstinacy, he shares the stage with a group of human performers. Step by step, their mutual investigations continually create new constellations, scenes, images and stories, triggered by the passionate power of human projection. David Weber-Krebs developed the idea behind Balthazar in 2011 together with students from the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. The piece has since toured throughout Europe with its own ensemble. At every venue, the group encounters a new, local donkey, whose individual character makes every performance unpredictable. With great charm and much self-reflection, Balthazar thus tells the story of the fascinating relationship between humans and animals, who will always remain mysterious at heart.
