No restraint, no apologies! The word “FAKA” means “to occupy” or “to penetrate” in Zulu and that is exactly what Desire Marea and Fela Gucci intent to do: with artistic performances, housy gqom beats and their wild club series “Cunty Power”, first initiated in Johannesburg and Cape Town, they advocate visibility for a full range of Black, queer identities. Internationally, at Berghain, the Berlin Biennale or the CTM festival, the duo has mainly made a name for themselves with psychedelic bass stage performances. Aside from their obvious love for Fela Kuti, FAKA draws on the vibes of South African pop-icons such as Boom Shaka and Brenda Fassie. While their music videos feature elaborate looks and designer stuff, their live performances include wigs and lots of skin. For the outfit should above all survive intense physical contact, let’s party!
