What if you could start again from scratch, all in an eight by ten meter room? The French-Belgian theatre shooting stars Halory Goerger and Antoine Defoort have decided to do no less in Germinal and to recreate the world in a surreal meditation. Equipped with pickaxes and mobile mixing desks, the four-person ensemble heads off straight through the thickets of language, accumulating questions and answers and establishing, at time meticulously cautiously, in others gruffly ruthlessly, the most ridiculous of connections. The stage blossoms into a lush textscape, a mindmap detailing the relationships between technology, knowledge and power, which, sure enough, allow for the invention of absolutely everything: from the wheel and the four laws of thermodynamics to the fundamentals of social interaction – finally, everything is brandnew again! Germinal is not only one of the best and most successful international theatre productions of these past few years, but also one of the most amusing.
