“Benjamin who?… Waldmann? Never heard of him!” Discovering musicians for the first time is another one of the tasks that LOKAL Listener host Gregor Praml has set himself. Pianist Benjamin Waldmann from the Palatinate is one such unfamiliar name. Yet his solo piano composition “Circles” has just surpassed the mark of 4.5 million listeners worldwide on Spotify. So who can call that “unknown”?! It’s high time we got to know this young musician, who is currently studying law at the Goethe University in Frankfurt. He had a band called “Henry and the Waiter” with whom he toured once Germany, but things got really interesting when he started writing and releasing his own solo pieces in late 2020. His style ranges somewhere between cinematic and neo-classical (referencing the likes of Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm and Hania Rani), although he himself says that he relies entirely on his feelings and never takes a cerebral approach to composing. The LOKAL Listener is finally returns to the stage of the LOKAL at Künstlerhaus Mousonturm – again on Sunday, but now at 6 pm!
Biography
Gregor Praml
Als gebürtiger Deutsch-Franzose lebt Gregor Praml heute in seiner Heimatstadt Frankfurt. Er ist mit der Kulturszene durch unterschiedlichste Projekte eng verknüpft. Der studierte E-Bassist und Kontrabassist war Mitglied des international mehrfach ausgezeichneten Ensembles Mi Loco Tango (u.a. Internationaler Piazzolla Wettbewerb 2008). Mit dem Jazz-Trio tri.of.us konnte er dann seine Qualitäten als Kontrabassist mit dem Hang zum Spiel mit Effekten und Loops unter Beweis stellen kann. Als Solist ist er aktuell Preisträger des Internat. Sperger Kontrabasswettbewerbs 2020 in der Kategorie „Kreativität“. Praml arrangiert und komponiert für Theater-, Performance- und Tanzproduktionen gerne ausgehend vom Bass als Hauptinstrument, der dadurch kein Begleitinstrument bleibt sondern als ungewöhnlicher Solist in Erscheinung tritt. Die Improvisation ist dabei immer ein wichtiges Element seiner Arbeit.
In den letzten Jahren war Gregor Praml als Komponist u.a. verantwortlich für die Musik zur KonzertLesung IN AUSCHWITZ GAB ES KEINE VÖGEL (Autorin: Monika Held) sowie für die Tanzstücke ANGSTHASEN und GÄNSEHAUT UND ESPENLAUB (Choreografie: Célestine Hennermann) am Theaterhaus Frankfurt und dem Volkstheater im Hirschgraben.
