The Pyramids’ spiritual jazz is a complex musical arrangement that is closely interwoven with its African-American members’ experience. They started as an avant-garde jazz collective at Antioch College in Ohio in the 1970s, toured through many countries and primarily devoted themselves to traditional African music developments in Ghana, Ethiopia and Nairobi. This influences their vibrant rhythms and instrumental spectrum. Idris Ackamoor, the head of the band, associates a humanitarian vision with the new album We Be All Africans: “We have to believe in a human community that exists independently of the color of our skin.” (spex) He is the founder of the non-profit organization Cultural Odyssey, which supports art as social activism, music and theater events. For Ackamoor, art is a form of universal communication that helps us get closer to the “human family” ideal.
