For the French philosopher and science historian Bruno Latour, the cave is far more than that remote, underground place, which humanity once left behind. Nor is it a potential safe haven, but rather a fitting image for our situation – living within a flimsy layer of air at the outskirts of our planet, into which we are inescapably embedded. For us, there is no outside place, which we could exist in, beyond this highly sensitive, fragile “critical zone”. At the invitation of Philippe Quesne, Latour and director Frédérique Aït Touati have produced a performance, a conceptual video simulation, in which they explore the possibilities and meaning of this other inside view of the earth.
