John Kameel Farah calls his unique form of composing “maximalism”. His acoustically powerful pieces are hybrids of improvisation, composition and electronic music. Raised in Canada as the son of Palestinian-Canadian parents, Farah studied composition and piano in Toronto. Early and Baroque piano music, music from the Near East and electronic dance music have left their influences on his work, in which complexity and narration are not mutually exclusive. His solo performances – somewhere between concert hall and experimental DJ set – interweave piano, synthesizer and pipe organ sounds with fragments of Arabic melodies into a surreal-organic whole.
