Upon decommissioning, the FARC guerrilla left behind the “El Borugo” camp deep in the Columbian jungle. The government then transformed it into an “Open-Air Museum to Commemorate the Civil War”: here soldiers re-enact the kidnappings and atrocities of the guerrilla in amateur scenarios for tourists in order to immortalize the memory of the crimes – but at the same time also erasing forever from memory the utopia that once led to the rebel uprising. Mapa Teatro, one of South America’s most important theatre groups, deals with this “war of memories” and the struggle for interpretative control over history. “La Despedida” is grand work of visual, cinematic and symbolic, a documentary-theatrical re-enactment of the real re-enactments by the military, ending in suggestive tableaus that bid a last farewell to Latin America’s revolutionary movements.
