Aya Metwalli and Nadah El Shazly, two of the most adventurous musicians of the MENA region are invited on stage in SOMMERBAU.

Aya Metwalli is a singer, songwriter, composer and sonic artist. She uses analogue synthesizers to create sombre textures and
eerie, vibrant soundscapes. With heavy drones and drum machines she combines both noise and melody to create a jarring industrial sound that immerses us deep in a mystic world. Aya Metwalli’s music projects are heavily influenced by her childhood in Cairo. Inspired by Arabic pop and classical melodies, she performs these vocally and modulates the results electronically. The producer, singer and sonic artist Nadah El Shazly uses her voice, field recordings and instruments to create haunting song forms and sonic works whose complex layers and dynamic structures alter our perceptions of time and space. Her debut album “Ahwar” explores the sonic and harmonic limits of popular music in the early 19th century from her native Egypt and radically reinvents this.
