Not only has black-facing recently spawned a major debate in Germany, but is sadly also an on-going topic in Brazil. Marcio Abreu, considered of the bravest and most gifted playwrights and theatre directors in the country, deals with central issues of everyday racisms along the lines of this discussion together with his Companhia Brasileira de Teatro. Based on Achille Mbembe’s ground-breaking book “Critique of Black Reason” and his thoughts on the history and effects of slavery, the company takes a closer look at the north-south divide and the aftermath of post-colonialism. “Preto” (Black), created during a residency at Mousonturm, interweaves the Brazilian perspective with a global one, theatre with visual arts, philosophy with literature, music with anthropology.

Marcio Abreu / Companhia Brasileira de Teatro
Marcio Abreu ist ein in Rio de Janeiro geborener Schauspieler, Regisseur, Autor und Dramaturg. Seine Ausbildung absolvierte er bei EITALC (Escola Internacional de Teatro da América Latina) und ISTA (Escola Internacional de Antropologia Teatral). Im Jahr 2000 gründete er in Curitiba die Companhia Brasileira de Teatro, ein Kollektiv von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern aus verschiedenen Regionen des Landes, und entwickelt seither künstlerische Forschungsprojekte und kreative Prozesse im Austausch mit Künstlerinnen und Künstlern aus verschiedenen Teilen Brasiliens und anderen Ländern.
Die Arbeit des Kollektivs ist vor allem auf neue Formen des Schreibens und auf die Entwicklung zeitgenössischer Theaterstücke und Performances ausgerichtet. Zu den wichtigsten Realisierungen gehören eigene, oft von Marcio Abreu verfasste Stücke, deren Dramaturgien in kollaborativen Prozessen und parallel zur Entstehung der Stücke entwickelt werden, wie Preto (2017), PROJETO bRASIL (2015), Vida (2010), O que eu gostaria de dizer (2008), Volta ao dia (2002).
Darüber hinaus hat das Ensemble viele Stücke von in Brasilien unveröffentlichten Autoren inszeniert und neu interpretiert, wie z. B.: Krum (2015) von Hanoch Levin, Esta Criança (2012) von Joël Pommerat, Isso te interessa (2011) von Noëlle Renaude oder Oxigênio (2010) von Ivan Viripaev.
Das Ensemble tauscht sich häufig mit anderen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern im In- und Ausland aus. Im Jahr 2014 wurde in Frankreich das Stück Nus, Ferozes e Antropófagos uraufgeführt, in einer Zusammenarbeit mit dem französischen Kollektiv Jakart.
Das Ensemble verfügt über ein aktives Repertoire, das häufig zirkuliert und mit den wichtigsten Kunstpreisen Brasiliens (Prêmio Shell RJ, Prêmio APCA und Prêmio Bravo!) ausgezeichnet wurde. Projeto Brasil war auf Tournee in Dresden (Hellerau) und im Mousonturm (Frankfurt) und Preto wurde 2018 zum Berliner Theatertreffen im Rahmen von Shifting Realities eingeladen und tourte 2019 zur Fitei in Porto und zum Théatre en mai in Dijon.
Kürzlich hat das Ensemble das Stück Por que náo vivemos, eine Adaption von Czechows Platonov, in Rio de Janeiro uraufgeführt und tourt damit durch verschiedene brasilianische Städte.
