Redancing History: an introduction to the case of Afro-Peruvian dance

Mousonturm Probebühne 2

Workshop

Citing Peruvian dances from the African diaspora, this session by dancer and educator Amelia Uzategio Bonilla invites movers to engage with their creative selves, moving to polyrhythmic music. These practices source memory, feeling and sensation and helped Afro-Peruvian to restage historically-significant scenes from Peru’s colonial period with themselves as the central characters. Together, we will question what this means for us today, addressing issues such as cultural racism, appropriation and reconsidering dance history from the position of the historically marginalised.
