Choreography/Dance

How to speak about the unspeakable? Ruanda 1994: Dorothée Munyaneza was twelve years old when in an act of genocide members of Tutsi minority were murdered. She was lucky and able to flee.

On stage, she gazes back into her past: during happier times, she liked to listen to the radio show “Samedi détente”, which brought foreign, international music to Ruanda every Saturday. The absolute highlight of the week featured music that people danced and sang to. The resulting individual choreographies were then performed on Mondays in a competition at the playground. A real ritual. In 2014, Dorothée Munyaneza invented her very own “Samedi détente”. She sings and dances with an electrifying physical presence, revealing pure survival instinct, but also quiet moments of happiness. With her haunting, poetic and powerful voice, she takes the audience with her from Europe to Africa, from the past into the presence.
