(Kapstadt)

SANCTUARY

Location: Frankfurt LAB (Gallus)

Performance/Installation

SANCTUARY is a virtual journey across the surreal terrain of the crisis-ridden EU, in which racism and populism are on the rise, while surveillance and border controls are expanding. During a two-year research phase, in which Brett Bailey visited refugee camps across Europe, he developed iconic scenes that speak of the realities and states of limbo that many refugees and migrants experience daily, and depict the delusions of those EU citizens who fear them. In his walk-in installation, SANCTUARY – a prison-like labyrinth with performers from countries in the Near East, Africa, Europe and from Frankfurt – the audience encounters a series of scenes performed by refugees, migrants, activists and translators.
