On their compilation Songs of Gastarbeiter (Songs of the Migrant Worker), Berlin author and co-founder of Kanack Attack Imran Ayata and Munich theatre maker, musician and DJ Bülent Kullukcu aka AYKU retell the history of immigration in Germany. For this, they rummaged through archives, combed through the music collections of their parents and acquaintances, annoyed friends and enemies to find the songs of the first generation of German immigrants. Their selection features over one hundred songs in German and Turkish, long forgotten melodies that threatened to be lost forever: a musical journey, which revisits the subject of immigration in Germany and supplies a new perspective on this country. “This music is an integral part of the soundtrack of the Federal Republic of Germany”, wrote one critic and: “A treasure trove, perhaps the largest unearthed in Germany for a long time.”
