“Hip-hop is always only as homophobe and sexist as the society to which it belongs”, such is the conviction of Sookee: “I felt the urgent need to create a space for myself in hip-hop, in which I call the shots without having to stick to established rules.” The established rules probably couldn’t hold up to the concept of this Berlin rapper anyway – her work is much too complex and way too defiant. Establishing feminist lyrics and positions against sexism, racism and anti-Semitism in a society dripping with testosterone: not quite so easy.
Sookee, also know under her second pseudonym Quing of Berlin, is a German rapper. She fights for the rights of the queer scene and actively combats homophobia and sexism in German hip-hop, as well as racism in Germany.
