Daniel Kahn & The Painted Bird, the international Klezmer band led by the Detroit-born musician, releases its albums on the prestigious Berlin record label Oriente Musik. Political ballads penned by Kahn himself oscillate fearlessly between revolution and alienation, original songs of his own and musical renditions of poems and songs by Jewish authors, Bertolt Brecht, Heinrich Heine and Kurt Tucholsky, which he pays tribute to and in doing so rounds off the group’s diverse repertoire. While also drawing on Klezmer tradition, the group confidently and playfully combines the past with punk, folk and a quality of singer-songwriting that is as idiosyncratic balladic as that of Tom Waits. A rousing trip, featuring Yiddish folk songs, political cabaret, dance music and punk – beautiful and wild!
