Talk That Talk: Fremd im eigenen Land – Ein Panel zu Rap & Rassismus

Mousonturm Saal/Bau

As the third and final part of their series of events “Talk That Talk”, the DJ crew GG Vybe presents a panel on rap and racism. Here rappers will talk about their experiences of racism and describe how they have communicated them through their music. Rap as a form of “street journalism” can be seen as a means of expression through which the experiences of discrimination and real lives of marginalised groups can be brought to public attention. A political start was made in Germany in 1992 with “Fremd im eigenen Land” by Advanced Chemistry, however, over time rap has distanced itself from this. A return to “street journalism” only came about through marginalised groups whose rapping includes references to lives that are marked by poverty, discrimination and social exclusion. Such developments in music are also reflected in society at large as racism has been neglected for too long in public discourse in Germany.
