Two voices, double bass and electric guitar: that’s all. Textor & Renz leave out what’s unnecessary and this instantly produces a sound all of their own that can find magic in a single note and in a simple line and make it shine. The duo has listened to a lot of Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, you can hear that, but also the more melancholy sounds of Neil Young, Nick Drake and Townes van Zandt. Though their music is based on elementary American models, Textor & Renz bring an abstract rigour, an apparently cool and detached approach with them. And despite this, there is a great deal of emotion, but nothing loud or declamatory. Henrik von Holtum and Holger Renz have now been playing together for nine years. Almost every one of their songs is illuminated by a moment of rawness – you can feel and hear their communication, their friendship and more than the sum of their individual parts.
