Pitch-black humour, eccentric costumes, elements of circus, a unique sound composed of falsetto, musical saw, accordion, drums and piano. With their weird and wonderful musical renditions of books such as the Shockheaded Peter, Woyzeck or The Tale of Franz Biberkopf, the Tiger Lilies have excited the theatre world since the late 1990’s. The iconic avant-garde trio headed by singer-songwriter Martyn Jacques is committed to the darker sides of life in the tradition of Kurt Weill and Jacques Brel. Inspiration for their new album Cold Night in Soho came from their own past experiences of living in Soho in the eighties, when London’s trendy neighbourhood was still home to shady characters, prostitution and drugs. A fascinating biotope, in which their “Brechtian punk cabaret” flourished splendidly.
