A ghost is haunting Europe – the ghost of a „new municipalism”. While politics are losing democratic legitimation on a European and national basis, grassroot initiatives and urban platforms have taken over city halls in many cities in South Europe. They attempt to make municipal politics in favor of the population’s needs and simultaneously try to radically democratize existing institutions. What are characteristics of these initiatives and what perspectives do they provide for urban movements in this country?
