Oper Offenbach

In many cities, the construction of new buildings for cultural institutions is causing heated debate. In Frankfurt, there is currently intense discussion about the future of the city’s municipal stages. While Frankfurt debates, the artist collective YRD.Works is initiating an entirely different kind of construction project in Offenbach. After the 1. Offenbacher Seefestspiele, during which the three artists created a 600 sqm lake out of a puddle, they now turn their attention to premier class of performative disciplines. In one of Offenbach’s most attractive areas, the tip of the island in the harbour, they turn the construction of an opera into a piece in itself. Instead of layering architectural elements on top of one another as in high-rise buildings, they are going to burst the opera house open. Supported by colleagues from the fields of performance, music, design and photography, the artist collective will develop and perform in four spatial sculptures that will be created successively on the harbor island. The sculptures allow for a view onto different architectural details that are essential for an opera while seeking ambivalences that are imprinted in this monolith of high culture.

Oper Offenbach is the final project of the Doppelpass partnership between YRD.Works and Künstlerhaus Mousonturm which is funded by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes.
