Erik Satie as contemporary chamber jazz? Israeli cembalist and pianist Tamar Halperin, well-known for transcending boundaries, has chosen a subjective selection of 18 pieces from French composer’s extensive œuvre (1866–1925) and brushed them against the grain. The result in 2016 was an exciting album, which gleans unexpected aspects from the humorous, but occasionally somewhat mechanical compositions. Recorded on different instruments – piano, cembalo, carillon, Hammond organ or Wurlitzer – and with the circumspect use of electronics, the reinterpretations create a wide array of acoustic patterns. Tamar Halperin first came into the public eye through her collaborations with jazz pianist Michael Wollny (joint album: “Wunderkammer”). Her repertory encompasses works from over five centuries.
