The flickering flame of our memory

Santiago Mariño

Sometimes, I forget that I'm living in a country where I wasn't born. I look around and I question my presence... my body, that fleshy memory, is it really here? What parts are dwelling, disappearing between dimentions? What am I a memory of?

My body is the flesh manifestation of ancestral genealogies who have meshed through centuries of hybridization. My ancestors and I bear the ongoing scar of colonization, and my being in the world webs itself between southamerican cosmologies, western performativities and dance imaginaries. To acknowledge my body as a construct of mestizaje, is to recognize the layers of history and politics that reside within it.

The piece is a conversation with the things that are bound to dissappear and the things that persist as I recall them in dance. It is a dialogue with remains that can’t be touched, and that unveils how remembrance and forgetting are both inevitable.
