Going But Backwards

The training focuses on activating ways of approaching movement and the body through a backward perspective. We will challenge the habitual forward orientation to the body, space, and movement, and instead activate alternative ways of perceiving and initiating movement. Using somatic exercises, improvisation scores, and set material, we’ll question familiar movement patterns and explore how to engage with the back spaces of the body. We will explore other ways to navigate the space, initiate movement and relate to others, including touch, voice and Kinesthetic awareness. By reversing not just movement but our approach to it, we’ll shift our sense of balance, coordination, and our perception of time and space—ultimately shifting the way we move.

Biography

Eslam Elnebishy is a choreographer and dancer born in Cairo, now based between Frankfurt and Cairo. His work delves into how subjectivities are shaped in contemporary society, focusing on the modes of representation that influence them. He often explores that through the interplay between language, voice, and the body, creating spaces for connection through humour, empathy, and reflection. He graduated from the Choreography and Performance Master's program (CUP) in Gießen, Germany, in 2024. He worked as a choreographer and dancer across Africa and Europe, after completing his studies at Maat|CCDC Dance School in Cairo 2019. He studied at Cairo Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences (CILAS) in 2016.
