The Cake Sessions

Anno Bolender & Petra Lehr

Anno Bolender and Petra Lehr dance closely connected in a rehearsal space. Their bodies form a flowing line as light streams through large windows onto the floor.
Anno Bolender and Petra Lehr move dynamically in a light-filled room. In the foreground, Anoo Bolender turns backward, while Petra Lehr appears blurred in the background with arms outstretched.

A still-life-like arrangement of two plates of cake, a cup of coffee and a bouquet of roses in a porcelain jug on a dark surface. The atmosphere feels calm and inviting – possibly a break for Anno Bolender and Petra Lehr.

The Cake Sessions

“That sounded so selfish that I said I would only bake cakes for myself. But the truth is: that you only really succeed with the cakes that you like yourself too. The other ones you just mix together. You only succeed with what you yourself enjoy too. And that's the case with everything in life.”
(My grandmother, March 2025)

What are the cherishable moments and pleasurable stories that revive us, give us strength and let us blossom?

“The Cake Sessions” is a project about making encounters between young and old women* – listening to and learning from each other. They are interested in the stories and narratives that show how individual and beautiful we are – and how we find each other.

The Cake Session at Mousonturm is curated by Anno Bolender together with choreographer and dancer Petra Lehr, who has been part of the Frankfurt dance scene since the 1970s.

They create space for voices that sometimes are silenced or overheard in our society. Elderly people, especially women* are often excluded from telling their stories. By opening the space for celebrating these delicious sharings, “The Cake Sessions” become a way of learning from each other and re-nurture intergenerational connection(s).

The performance oscillates between lecture, filmscreening, interactive elements and dance. In an intimate setting, we pose ourselves the question on how we celebrate others and ourselves, how to come together and what the pleasure of sharing is.

And by the way: Yes, there is going to be cake!
