16BIT

Paula Rosolen / Haptic Hide

Paula Rosolen’s “16BIT” thrilled Frankfurt audiences at its premiere at the Mousonturm in 2022. After acclaimed performances across Europe, the high-energy dance piece returns – and takes to the big stage at the Depot in Bockenheim. Between kick drums, loops, and basslines, Rosolen and her six-member ensemble dance their way through the techno revolution. From its origins in Detroit’s Black communities, through the ecstatic Frankfurt scene, to its explosive release in Berlin after the fall of the Wall, “16BIT” traces the dimensions and impact of techno on art, politics, and lifestyles. Alongside Berlin, Frankfurt was the cultural center of techno and club culture in the early 1990s – with influential figures like Sven Väth and Anzilotti and Michael Münzing, whose project “16Bit” gave its name to Rosolen’s piece. Starting with simple, looped movements, the dancers develop a hypnotic power that draws the audience in. “16BIT” is far more than a piece about techno: It is a moving celebration of the shared experience of energy.
