Touching From A Distance

Matter of Facts Studio, Rita Mazza and Dodzi Dougban

In the deepest depths: a collective of hearing musicians submerge themselves together with two deaf choreographers – exploring the deep sea as a model for boundless worlds of perception. Inspired by the underwater films of biologist and filmmaker Jean Painlevé, the stage in “Touching From A Distance” becomes a place where oscillations and vibrations are transmitted, strings of pearls shimmer in rainbow colours, deep bass notes flood the space in waves, and the visible and the audible intertwine into a multiple layers. Frankfurt-based musicians Yuka Ohta and Diego Ramos Rodríguez from Matter of Facts Studio, known for their work in the field of new music, join forces with hip-hop and street-style choreographer Dodzi Dougban. Amidst pressures, body language(s), beats and vibrations, they work together to blur the boundaries of the visible and the audible. In close collaboration with choreographer Rita Mazza, the ensemble dedicates itself to visual music and its texture. The deep sea, as a threatened and largely unexplored ecosystem, becomes a utopian place where guesswork and the willingness to take risks allow for new encounters. “Touching From A Distance” is an experimental music theatre piece enraptured by the deep sea, a shared exploration of the body in music and the musicality of choreography. The audience is invited to immerse themselves and let themselves drift.
