For this collaborative project, She She Pop cast a fascinated view upon the orchestra of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie. They discover a monstrous collective body – a multi-limbed, expressive being breathing with numerous lungs – and, at the same time, a polyphonic, creative community much like She She Pop themselves. Unlike the artists of the performance collective, however, the orchestra musicians are highly specialised and commit themselves to the common cause through a strict division of labour, their attention shifting between the person at the conductor’s podium and the musical score, whose notes – written by an untouchable genius – must be executed precisely and in the correct order. Where does the euphoria that this collective practice apparently unleashes in those involved and everyone present come from? At what price does this come?? What about the inner contradictions, idiosyncrasies and special abilities of the individual players – not to mention the inhibitions, shortcomings, personal worries and doubts? How and where do these come to the fore?
For Frei_Spiel X: Das Große Ganze, She She Pop are developing performative scores in which the collective body of the orchestra and the individual perspectives of the participating musicians enter into a dialogue. A collective experiment exploring the tension between duty and self-expression, between individual responsibility and shared freedom.

The Junge Deutsche Philharmonie brings together the finest students from German-speaking music conservatories to form an ensemble of the highest artistic caliber. With a joy of playing and an unmistakable energy, it has been thrilling audiences and critics alike for over 50 years. Beginning with the 26/27 season, John Storgårds will serve as the orchestra’s principal conductor and artistic advisor. In addition to a contemporary approach to works from the Classical and Romantic repertoires, the music of the 20th and 21st centuries is a fundamental part of the orchestra’s identity. A progressive evolution of traditional concert formats, the contextualization of programs, and the communication of an unconditional enthusiasm for music form the foundation of its artistic practice.
She She Pop is a Berlin-based feminist performance collective that emerged in the 1990s from the Institute for Applied Theater Studies in Giessen. The members see themselves as authors, dramaturgs, and performers of their stage productions. Incorporating their own autobiographical elements is primarily a method, not the purpose of their work. She She Pop practice a form of theater committed to experimentation. They use the stage as a space of acute public engagement: here, decisions are made, modes of conversation and social systems are tested, and speech patterns and social rituals are rehearsed or discarded. She She Pop see their mission as exploring the societal boundaries of communication—and deliberately and artfully transcending them within the safe space of art. The theater becomes a space for utopian communication. The audience, too, often takes on a special role: All of She She Pop’s works are, in their own way, experiments or demonstrations that would be invalid without the audience’s presence. Members include Sebastian Bark, Johanna Freiburg, Lisa Lucassen, Mieke Matzke, Ilia Papatheodorou, Berit Stumpf, and Elke Weber.Former group members include Fanni Halmburger, Claude Jansen, Katharina Oberlik, and Anja von Steht. At the production office in the Kunstquartier Bethanien in Berlin-Kreuzberg, Tina Ebert, Aminata Oelßner, and Elke Weber are responsible for management, executive leadership, administration and finance, production, business development, distribution, communications, and touring. The international production house HAU Hebbel am Ufer has been She She Pops’ ongoing co-producer and collaboration partner in Berlin since 2003.
