Week 1: Improvisation with Flow States

Using the methodology of improvisation, the first week will explore bodymind flow states. Starting with breath work, durational guided improvisation follows where both individual and collective somatic experiences are pursued while stamina and concentration are challenged. Through the use of image, we seek to tap in to various qualities and textures our body carries such as the blood in our veins or the air we exchange. Curiosity for research, and a will to drive one’s own experience are required.

Week 2: Ballet

Training in the second week takes the structure and technique of ballet as a means to train and expand one’s vocabulary as well as cultivate sensitivity toward space and time. Within the exercises, articulation of the spine, sense of weight, and use of energy are some of the areas of focus. While valuing functional alignment, emphasis is also put on the sensorial experience of movement and expression as opposed to sheer appearance. To this end, intermediate to advanced level ballet exercises will be offered to dance with varying music.

In both weeks, we will work toward reaching a sense of clarity and readiness for the day to come.

Q & A

1. Are there certain methods or artists that are influencing your teaching praxis (in both improvisation and ballet)?

Yes. My practice is very much influenced by the THEORY of Noguchi taiso - a somatic movement practice created by Michizo Noguchi (1914-1998). The theory has more direct impact on the improvisation class as the methodology holds capacity for deep somatic focus. However, the ideas also run through my practice of ballet in terms of the understanding of the bodymind and methods of both physical and mental engagement.

2. In your opinion, what should profitraining offer to support dancers’ readiness for the day to come?

In taking profitraining as a dancer, I seek the discipline to connect to the bodymind, space, time, and others with whom I share space through moving, dancing, thinking and sweating together.
