How can performance become a catalyst for thought, feeling, and imagination?
In her latest work, “Performance Club”, postmodern dance pioneer Deborah Hay presents a performance that unfolds anew each evening over the course of nine days, blurring the boundaries between performer and audience, art and life.
- The Performance Club is a timed, 1-hour event. Its spirit is that of a research library.
- The live performance lasts 15 - 30 minutes. Audience will then have a response period of 45 – 30 minutes, filling the remaining portion of the hourlong event.
- The Performance Club is not about critique, and no one imposes their exploration on anyone else.It is a community experiment that provides audiences and performers the opportunity to notice how they influence and inspire one another.
- There is no performance critique or feedback. Audience engage in their silent, individual reflections using personally relevant mediums: meditation, drawing, writing, dancing, moving, resting, etc.

Biography
Choreographer/performer Deborah Hay began her career in the early 1960’s with the Judson Dance Theatre. In her five decades at the vanguard of choreographic experimentation, she has helped re-define the field of dance with her revolutionary work and influential books, Lamb at the Altar, 1991, Duke University Press, and My Body, the Buddhist, 2001, and Using the Sky, 2019, Wesleyan University Press. She is one of the 21 American performing artists to receive the inaugural and groundbreaking 2012 Doris Duke Artist Award. May 5, 2015 France’s Minister of Culture and Communication awarded Hay the title of CHEVALIER DE L’ORDRE DES ARTS ET DES LETTRES. Tanz Im August 2019 presented RE-Perspective covering Hay’s work from 1968 to the present and in 2021/22 Mercat de les Flor in Barcelona presented a retrospective of her work. about “The Lesser Told Story”
This program of the festival invites four distinguished artists, story-tellers and performers – Tim Etchells, Deborah Hay, Faustin Linyekula and Ezster Salomon – to offer the lesser told of the many stories they have shared across the span of their practices. These stories may find refuge in the quiet shadows of the very private and intimate, as well as that which is public and known in one context, but invisible and unknown in another. This happening is not a performance, but rather a sharing. “The Lesser Told Story” invites the public to an intimate moment and a special encounter with some of the leading lights of performing arts practice across diverse generations and eras to offer a hopeful, but unusual kind of contact with the artists.

- In a duet with her mother, Erzsébet Gyarmati, choreographer Eszter Salamon once again explores her long-standing research into the relationship between mothers and daughters.
