Tumi Mogorosi has made a name for himself in Johannesburg’s jazz scene and far beyond as part of an aspiring generation of young South African musicians. The drummer and composer born in 1987, works with musicians such as Feya Faku, Herbie Tsoaeli and Andile Yenana and is part of the band Shabaka and the Ancestors by the British artist Shabaka Hutchings. For his debut album “Project Elo” (2014), Mogorosi received a series of prestigious prizes and “Sanctum Sanctorium”, which he recorded in 2016 with singer Gabisile Motuba and pianist Malcolm Braff, was an international success. After several projects dealing conceptually with oppression, e.g. “The Wretched” based on Frantz Fanon, Mogorosi now presents his version of contemporary South African jazz at Mousonturm with his new five-man formation Group Theory.
