After "Große Freiheit", Rocko Schamoni once again immerses himself in the seething scene of the sixties and seventies in Hamburg, where a free, unbridled life is celebrated beyond all bourgeois moral concepts. At the centre of the novel is Joska Pintschovius' friendship with Heino Jaeger, a highly gifted artist, voice impersonator and satirist who is cult-like revered as a "master". And in the end will burn up because of his spiritual permeability. This combination of genius and madness fascinates the narrator and chronicler Schamoni, who shows himself more personal and vulnerable than ever before in his exploration of this life.
