The AXIS Dance Company from Oakland is one of the most renowned ensembles for dancers with and without disabilities. Their physically powerful, artistically eclectic dance pieces inspire people worldwide and expand the public understanding of dance and disability. During the Tanzfestival, the company will present Roots Above Ground, a new work by its artistic director Marc Brew. The performance will be the first part of the public programme of an Extension Residency, during which Marc Brew will be developing several pieces at the various venues belonging to the Tanzplattform Rhein-Main until summer 2022. "Roots Above Ground" explores the multiple meanings of being at home. It delves deep into Marc Brew’s own emotional journey as an immigrant to the US, a disabled gay man and dancer, always moving to follow his ambition and belong at the same time. The piece is a moving metaphor for the human need to belong and how this relates to our own perceptions.
