What is Ballroom Culture
What is Ballroom Culture
Ballroom emerged in the early 1970s in Harlem, New York. Marginalised by the dominant white and heterosexual society, Black and Latinx people from the LGBTIQ+ community came together in so-called ballrooms - spaces where they could feel safe – and formed surrogate families (so-called houses), danced and performed playfully with, for and against each other.
The pop-cultural exploitation of voguing, which regularly leads to its equation with ballroom, met with criticism from the ballroom scene from the very beginning. Voguing, a dynamic dance style with posing elements, emerged in the late 80s in the Harlem ballroom community and gained greater popularity in the 90s through the award-winning documentary “Paris is Burning”.
