On the album “Songs for Broken Ships”, released 2023 on the Hamburg-based Pingipung label, MD Pallavi and Andi Otto have succeeded in creating one of the currently most convincing collaborations between artists from Germany and India. They released their first single “Bangalore Whispers” together in 2016 and in doing so, caused a furore on downtempo dancefloors around the world. MD Pallavi is a singer, actress, filmmaker and performer from Bangalore, South India, where she has been studying Hindustani music and poetry since childhood. She sings poems in her mother tongue Kannada, which Andi Otto then weaves into hypnotic soundtracks. Andi Otto is a cellist and sound researcher, writes music for dance theatre and has developed a cello bow equipped with sensors that he can play like an independent instrument. His theoretical and practical artistic work inquires into the role played by a music-making body in an electronic setting. In their joint performance, experimental acoustic ballads, folktronica and disco tracks oscillate between electronic and analogue production, with free improvisations and traces of classical Indian music.
