African Contemporary Dance – Exploring African Movement Aesthetic through the Cultural Lenses

Joshua Akubo Gabriel

The workshops invite the dancer into the African philosophy and aesthetic of movement that reinforces community with self and the collective. The unseen that influences the seen, the once known space that has been forgotten and a time before this time that we were blessed. The movement explores textures from many disciplines with a base in the cultural idea of movement in Nigeria from masters who are constantly investigating the relationships of decolonized bodies. We will use techniques from Capoeira, Krump, floorwork, Afro-cultural movement.

The workshops are movement philosophy rather than technique, that questions the body’s journey through ever evolving space time. The intersections between thinking and doing that demonstrates temporalities and dismantles the linear idea of being or even beginning or what is, what can or cannot be movement.

The Goal of the workshop is to inspire a new together. One that discover self and accepts the collective.

We will create hotspots of connection
We will think about the forgotten
We will mend our relationship with movement.
We will start again.
