Instead of despairing over the constantly changing Covid-19 hygiene requirements for public events, the team at Künstlerhaus Mousonturm is fulfilling a long-cherished dream: to radically transform the Mousonturm’s Main Theatre Hall. Based on an idea by the stage designer Barbara Ehnes, the raumlaborberlin collective for performative architecture is building an extraordinary theatrical rotunda into Mousonturm. Over the next six months, it will serve as a venue and meeting place for artists and spectators to counteract the currently prevailing primacy of physical distancing and clean, smooth surfaces with intimacy and material warmth, without ignoring the necessary regulations. Visitors are invited to sit in booths from where they can take part in the performances developed or adapted by artists and collectives for this space. With the help of this architecture, Künstlerhaus Mousonturm not only wants to create a special theatre experience in extraordinary times, but also to encourage people to think about the conventions of theatre spaces and supposedly neutral spatial dispositives such as the black box.
