Trisha Brown gehört als Mitbegründerin des Judson Church Theater und als Stilikone des US-Amerikanischen Postmodern Dance zu den einflussreichsten Persönlichkeiten des zeitgenössischen Tanzes. Mit ihrer 1970 gegründeten Trisha Brown Dance Company wurde sie international bekannt, ihre Choreografien, die sich aus alltäglichem Bewegungsmaterial speisen und durch Wiederholung und Überlagerung zu komplexen Bewegungsfolgen zusammenfügen, haben ganze Tänzergenerationen, darunter Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker und Meg Stuart, beeinflusst. Brown entwirft in ihren Arbeiten, die sie häufig im Dialog mit bildenden Künstlern und Komponisten entwickelt hat, choreografische Grundsätze, die (Alltags-)Bewegung von erzählender Geschichte, Bedeutung, Darstellung, Kontext oder Emotion lösen und als offenes Systeme begreifen. Bewegung ist dann weder funktional noch pantomimisch, sondern ein Werkzeug, um die Fähigkeiten des Körpers aufzuschlüsseln.
