WAGNER PROJECT – Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. A School of Hip-Hop

In „WAGNER PROJECT – Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ Japanese theatre artist Akira Takayama brings one of Richard Wagner’s best known operas onto the Mousonturm stage: “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg”. Based on the fictive narrative of Wagner’s opera and its historical context – a competition between singers at the time of Reformation – Takayama founded a “School of Hip Hop”. Here the audience encounters a group of 18 “master students”, who live, study and sing together for ten days. As in the opera, the emphasis lies on teaching and learning, the discussion and definition of the rules of urban coexistence, as well as of poetry, vocals, subtleties and traditions – of hip hop. While the opera ends with a grand singing competition and a folk festival in front of the city gates, a hip hop battle between the 18 “master students” amidst the audience forms the finale of the “WAGNER PROJECT”.
