21 collects the individual memories of how different people experienced the moment of coming of age between the years 1938 and 1955. These stories are all about turning twenty-one. As stories, they always reflect the shared experiences of an entire generation, but they also often feature examples of those very private, distinct situations and experiences, which turn us – no matter how old we really are – into adults or unexpectedly force us to grow up. 21 presents portraits of the narrators as listeners in form of a video installation. The storytellers were filmed listening to audio recordings of their own memories for the first time. The visitors of the installation will also have the chance to tell their own stories.
