Choreographer and performer Jamila Johnson-Small creates spaces – on stages, screens, in corners and bodies – always in the context of decentralized structures of power and non-hierarchical living conditions. In a (staged) world of obstacles, opacities, electronic music and congregations of people, she navigates with her first solo project as Last Yearz Interesting Negro through copies of herself and Black queer images of body as well as between various mental states, textures, delirium and noise. In doing so, she overcomes binaries, seeks out alternative movements and refuses to serve as a projection surface or object of fantasy. Her singular work adopts a clear position: noise before silence, present before past, pleasure over doing it right!
