Unlimited, Flexible, Precarious. Working Conditions Torn between Freedom and Lack of Security

Mousonturm Studio 1

Tagung

The boundaries between “normal work” aka featuring social benefits and precarious working conditions are dissolving much like the boundaries between work and life. Regions of social insecurity and vulnerability are growing. We face both the rising challenges of self-organisation, heightened workloads and uncertainties, as well as more freedoms and increased autonomy in the workplace. Has precarity produced an all-pervasive atmosphere of insecurity throughout society, extending far beyond the group of citizens in truly precarious jobs? Can we speak of, as sociologist Oliver Marchart claims in his opening speech, a society of precarity? This conference seeks to explores these very questions and analyse both personal forms of handling the new situation, as well as new kinds of interest groups and ways of safeguarding social interests.
