Together they are a musical link between continents and cities: Dakar, New York, Paris and Kingston: Darra J Family are more than a band. From their beginnings in Dakar in the 90s, the committed texts of childhood friends Faada Freddy and N´Dongo D express an unshakeable optimism at the prospect of a better world. Stylistically their work draws on so many different sources that one of their concerts can turn into a live surprise show where Senegalese songs meet beatboxing, the funky soul of James Brown meets the hip hop of Public Enemy and the psychedelic rock of Pink Floyd meets the reggae of Bob Marley. In between the bass, mic, decks and percussion their activism remains of key importance with powerful spoken word contributions in English, French and Senegalese languages.
