The Toronto band takes its name from the birthplace of Calypso and has brought the music of the West-Indian islands to the north of the American continent in order to properly brush it up a bit. With the help of Kobo Town, songwriter and bandleader Drew Gonsalves has sent the classical calypso through a kind of contemporary filter and enriched it with Roots Reggae and Dub. The songs deal with homelessness, globalisation, war and domestic violence; all issues of central importance to Trinidad’s folk music. The result is a unique trans-national composition of rhythms, poetry and social commentary.
