Das Ende der Unsichtbarkeit (Book Release)

Mousonturm Saal

Reading

People who are read as Asian are in many ways less visible in German society than other migrant communities. Their stories are not told, even though they made up the largest percentage of guest workers in the GDR. Anti-Asian racism is hardly talked about, although it is a socially prevalent problem, as examples from Lichtenhagen right up to the Corona pandemic show. In “Das Ende der Unsichtbarkeit” (“The End of Invisibility”), Hami Nguyen tracks these phenomena based on her own family history. As the child of a contract worker, she fled with her mother from Vietnam to Germany in 1991. She describes her experiences of being excluded because of her appearance, the constant fear of deportation, and of bitter poverty in a manner that is as precise as it is powerful. And last but not least, she asks where this invisibility comes from and how closely racism and class are linked.
