Filmstill (c) Kelly Copper, Pavol Liska / Ulrich Seidl Filmproduktion

Elfriede Jelinek’s magnum opus “The Children of the Dead” serves as a template for Nature Theater of Oklahoma’s free cinematic adaptation of the novel at original locations all around the Nobel laureate’s childhood haunts. A SUPER 8 vacation film from Upper Styria creepily transforms into a resurrection of ‘undead’ ghosts. The (im)possibility of adequately coming to terms with accumulated guilt pervades all those terrains that still create national identity in the present – nature, culture, society, history. “This silent film is hilarious, edgy, at times confusing, funny and something not everyone will agree on. But this is cinema: We need to disagree!” (Jury statement Fiprescipreis, Berlinale Forum 2019)
