Singer and songwriter Scott Matthew has opted for a reduced acoustic aesthetic, for minimal variations, rather than spectacle. Cello, piano, ukulele, acoustic guitar accompany his own voice, seldom more, seldom less. On This Here Defeat, his fifth album, he broadens his sound to incorporate just a few more elements of e-guitar, drums and well-disguised electronic effects. But his lyrics remain true to his topic, the yearning for love and the disappearance of love – so also his title song about a pretty lousy ex-lover.
