Oh! Deep Sea – Corpus III (Format 8×9)

Mousonturm Studio 1

Dance/International Summer Lab

With Oh! Deep Sea – Corpus III, Kat Válastur ends her cycle of choreography based on Homer’s Odyssey. 2,500 years after the epos was written, the Greek choreographer uses the ancient classic that describes the king’s odyssey after the Trojan War to pose very modern questions on human existence. In her expressive, minimalistic choreography, she reflects on these questions while liberating them from the narrative plot. The fourth and final part is inspired by Ulysses’ journey as a living being into the underworld. Time and place become meaningless. But how does a living person experience this state? With razor-sharp precision, Válastur dissects autobiographical stories, memories and images in the finest sequences of movement. In the spectator’s eye, she manages to create the illusion of an early film on the bodies of the four performers, anatomized into individual chapters and recurring images so that new stories are continually created. But, for all their immediacy, they disappear just as abruptly, giving way to another episode. A whole life passes before your eyes…
