In “Sem Palavras” (Without Words), some of Brazil’s best-known contemporary theatre actors negotiate the highly explosive political and social situation in their home country and question the relevance of art in the struggle for basic democratic principles and social community. Marcio Abreu is not only one of Brazil’s most successful theatre directors, but also one of its best playwrights. Abreu describes his work as a text in which the body speaks first and foremost “as if language had been lost, as if language has dissipated”. Inspired by the queer idol of philosophy Paul B. Preciado, the production weaves individual narratives and accounts into an imaginative, dramatic-choreographic fabric of solos and group scenes in which the experiences of dream and reality are inextricably intertwined.
